a quiet site that wakes up when the Earth moves
A near real-time listening room for the Earth.
When a seismic event is detected anywhere on the planet, this page responds with sound and motion, both shaped by the event’s magnitude and depth.
There is always a delay of a few minutes to half an hour between when an earthquake physically occurs and when it appears here. Seismic waves take time to travel to stations, and the data centers need time to detect, verify, and publish each event.
Data: USGS Earthquake Hazards Program (global, dense coverage of the U.S. and Japan), EMSC seismicportal (dense coverage of Europe and the Mediterranean)
Sound: Pure Data patch by Olga Zubova, ported to the web with Tone.js
